What the client wanted
For most people the existing home worked fine. For Kian it was a daily obstacle course that made independence almost impossible. Working with Kian, his family, his carers and local architects Callinghams, the goal was a home designed around him that would support his independence into his later teenage years, prioritising accessibility and everyday function in every room.
What we did
We built two extensions, creating a dedicated wing for Kian and his carers with private bedrooms and hoist access to his en suite, where we installed an electronically adjustable bath, sink and toilet. We widened every ground floor doorway for his wheelchair and fitted automated doors that open from a control panel developed specifically for him. We built level access at every threshold, inside and out, so he can move freely across the whole ground floor and the newly landscaped garden. We installed a smart hub that lets Kian control the lighting, integrated blinds, sound and security at the touch of a button.

Challenges we overcame
The hardest part of adaptive living work is keeping a family home feeling like a family home while fitting specialist equipment throughout. We chose and detailed every fixture so function never crowded out comfort or style.
The Outcome
A beautiful home that turns daily challenges into something far more manageable for the whole family, and gives Kian real independence, with every area accessible and everything at his control.
