The situation
Our clients had realised a lifelong dream: moving to the countryside. The home they fell for was a sandstone cottage dating back 600 years. Beautiful, but worn out, with a failing roof and its original stone hidden behind years of cover up.
What the client wanted
Preserve and reveal everything that made the cottage historic, and still get a warm, efficient home fit for modern family life.
What we did
We treated the woodworm in the ancient oak beams and rebuilt the failing roof with new fascias, soffits and cast iron guttering to stay in keeping. We stripped back the original brick and stonework, uncovering stone that had been hidden for years, then insulated and rendered selected sections to lift efficiency. Inside, we laid raw oak flooring across the whole upper level, fitted porcelain tiles downstairs, built contemporary bathrooms and en suites, and made handmade oak framed doors and a bespoke oak staircase on site.
Challenges we overcame
Buildings this old punish assumptions. Rot, infestation and centuries of alterations meant planning again as we uncovered the building's true condition. Our team treated every one as a problem to solve, not a reason to compromise.
The Outcome
The stone cottage is stone once more. A 600 year old building restored to its former splendour, with a frameless glazed deck giving unobstructed views over the grounds. A home that is both a piece of history and a comfortable modern family house
